EU Treaty boost as Ireland votes yes
Opinion polls had predicted a tight result in the referendum in Ireland on the Lisbon Treaty. In the end the result was a landslide. The result not only increases the chances of the treaty coming into force, it also increases the credibility of the institutions that it’s set to reform. |

Early results in Afghanistan’s presidential election put the incumbent Hamid Karzai marginally in front of his former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah. With only 10 percent of ballot papers counted, Karzai has 40.6 percent of the vote. Abdullah trails by less than two percent. |

Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others
Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats or independents to rate their mental health as excellent, according to data from the last four November Gallup Health and Healthcare polls. Fifty-eight percent of Republicans report having excellent mental health, compared to 43% of independents and 38% of Democrats. This relationship between party identification and reports of excellent mental health persists even within categories of income, age, gender, church attendance, and education.

Latest poll shows growing support for Iraq war policy
USA TODAY's Susan Page reports that President Bush is making some headway in arguing that the increase in U.S. troops in Iraq is showing military progress. In the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, taken Friday through Sunday, the proportion of those who said the additional troops are "making the situation better" rose to 31% from 22% a month ago. Those who said it was "not making much difference" dropped to 41% from 51%.
