Hamas have agreed to honour a de facto truce it agreed upon with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas before he declared a ceasefire with Israel. However, the militant group will wait to see how Israel conducts itself before deciding on an official cessation of hostilities, a leader of Hamas said yesterday. Mahmoud Zahar said after Hamas leaders met with Abbas that the group is committed to what is called "quietness" until it sees whether Israel stops military activities and halts its targeted assassinations. The terms for release of Palestinian prisoners will be studied, he said. "Up to this moment, we are committed to the previous agreement with Mr Abbas, and we are going to see how the Israelis" will act, Zahar said. Following his meeting with Hamas, Abbas proceeded to a meeting with the Islamic Jihad militant group. Earlier Israelis agreed to allow dozens of exiled Palestinian militants to return home.
