The UAE announced yesterday it has signed defence contracts with a total value of Dh 1.47 billion on the fourth day of the 9th International Defence Conference and Exhibition (IDEX 2009), IDEX Spokesperson Major General Obaid Al Ketbi said today. |

Russia to start Yak-130 trainer deliveries to Algeria in 2009
Russia will begin deliveries of new Yak-130 combat trainers to Algeria in January 2009, the plane's manufacturer said on Wednesday. "We have a contract with Algeria to supply 16 aircraft," Oleg Demchenko, head of Russia's Irkut aircraft-manufacturing corporation, said at the Berlin Air Show ILA2008. "We are planning to start deliveries in January 2009." |

U.S. most armed country with 90 guns per 100 people
The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said. U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.

Russia supplies new Mi-17 helicopters to Iraq
The first batch of Russian Mi-17 Hip multi-purpose helicopters has been commissioned by the Iraqi army, an Iraqi newspaper said Sunday. Iraqi Defense Minister Abdel Qadar Jassim ai-Ubeidi inspected Saturday the aircraft at an air base near Baghdad, the Al Mada daily said, citing military sources. |

U.S. sanctions related to competition
U.S. sanctions against two Russian state-owned defense companies are related to competition, a deputy general director of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation said Sunday. The U.S. State Department said Friday it had introduced sanctions against Russia's state-controlled arms selling company Rosoboronexport and top aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi over their dealings with Iran.

Israel awaits delivery of $4.2bn in weaponry from US defence firms
ISRAEL has more than $4 billion (£2.1 billion) in outstanding credit and undelivered orders with American defence contractors.
Since 2001 the Israeli Armed Forces have been allocated $10.5 billion in military aid from the US Government, but they have received only $6.3 billion-worth of arms. |

Russia pushing ban on illegal production of Kalashnikov rifles
Russia's state-controlled arms exporter will push to stop the illegal production and supplies of Kalashnikov assault rifles, a company spokesman said Friday. "Rosoboronexport is resolved to use all available legal means to press for an end to the illegal production and supplies of Kalashnikov automatic rifles," Valery Kartavtsev said, adding that Russian enterprises intended to file lawsuits against illegal producers. Rosoboronexport Deputy Director Nikolai Shvets said 11 countries were producing Kalashnikov assault rifles illegally.
