Morocco minaret collapse kills at least 41
The number of people killed in the collapse of a mosque minaret in Morocco has risen to at least 41. Nearly 80 others were injured in the accident during Friday prayers in the town of Meknes. Frantic efforts to clear the debris and find surviviors followed. |

Internet domain first for UAE
The UAE will become one of the first countries to launch domain names in non-Latin characters later this year, the country’s telecommunications regulator says. Domain names – the internet addresses that end in “.com” and other suffixes – are the most common monikers behind every website, e-mail address and Twitter post. |

UAE harvests gold in the 11th Gulf Festival for Radio and Television Production
Manama, Bahrain - The United Arab Emirates bagged six awards- five gold medals and a silver as the 11th Gulf Festival for Radio and Television Production concluded in Bahrain. "The history of Heart and the March of a Nation", a TV production based on the life and message of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan produced by the Abu Dhabi broadcasting network won a gold medal in the documentary category.

Toyota recalls two models in the UAE
Toyota on Monday announced the recall of two models — Avalon and Sequoia (2005 - 2010) — in the UAE, out of the eight models recalled globally. Toyota recently had to recall 8 million cars globally due to a faulty accelerator which causes sudden and unexpected acceleration. The models affected are RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Tundra, and Sequoia. |

Weather blamed for plane crash off Lebanon
Bad weather is being blamed for the crash of an Ethiopian airlines plane off the coast of Lebanon. The Lebanese Prime Minister has flown over the crash site, as the search continues for any survivors. There were 90 people on board the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which disappeared from radar screens some five minutes after taking off from Beirut. |

UAE to operate air bridge to Haiti
The first plane of an air bridge ordered by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for delivering urgent humanitarian assistance to Haiti's earthquake victims will fly to the Dominican Republic in the next couple of day. A UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) team will leave to the Dominican Republic to coordinate and oversee field relief operations to ensure their prompt delivery to the affected population. |

Foreign countries including Saudi Arabia and Norway gave millions of dollars to former President Bill Clinton's charity as Hillary Rodham Clinton served her first year as President Barack Obama's secretary of state. A donor list released on New Year's Day by the William J. Clinton Foundation shows that Saudi Arabia and Norway each donated somewhere between $10 million to $25 million to the former president's charity. |

The Chinese Supreme Court rejected appeals – from the UK Government and 53-year-old Akmal Shaikh’s family – for clemency on the grounds that he was suffering from bipolar disorder. |

Bin-Laden's son wants to work for the UN
The son of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, Omar, has told a British magazine that he would like to promote peace and work for the United Nations. His comments were published on Thursday in New Statesman magazine. "I do not believe that I would be a good politician - I have a habit of speaking the truth, even when it does not serve me well. But I would like to be in a position to promote peace. I believe that the United Nations would be ideal for me," said Omar Bin-Laden. |

An international study has rated the UAE as the best place in the Arab world to live. That was the finding of a comprehensive, global survey of wealth and well-being by the Legatum Institute, an independent think-tank based in London. It collated statistics from 104 countries that make up more than 90 per cent of the world’s population. |

Mobile bus library to be launched for Abu Dhabi residents
A mobile library on a bus will be launched in Al Ain on Sunday for the residents in Abu Dhabi emirate. KITAB Bus, the National Mobile Library, is part of a goal to ensure that all parts of the Abu Dhabi community have access to books and reading. The Bus will make its debut at Bawadi Mall in Al Ain today (Sunday), the first day of the Al Ain Reads (AAR) book show which will continue until October 10. |

Prosecutors in Los Angeles have said they will demand the extradition from Switzerland of French movie director Roman Polanski, whose arrest on under-age sex charges 30 years ago has caused an international incident. Swiss police took him into custody on an international warrant when he arrived in Zurich on Saturday for a film festival. |

France Telecom vows to end staff suicides
France Telecom has vowed to do everything it can to stop a series of suicides among its staff. 23 people have taken their own lives since the start of 2008 with another 13 attempted suicides. After talks with France’s Labour Minister, Xavier Darcos, the head of France Telecom said measures such as surveillance and counselling would be introduced immediately. |

UAE population likely to cross 5m
The 2010 General Census in the UAE will be held from April 5 to 15, a top official said Tuesday. "The attributive night on April 5, a common reference point, will be adopted by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries in conducting a joint census for the first time next year," said Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, assistant undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior. |
